A beginner’s guide to Peckham
London is a big sprawling city. Life tends to centre around where you live and where you work – there can be parts of the city that you never visit, unless you make the effort to get there.
One of London’s neighbourhoods that you should make the effort to visit is Peckham in South London.
It’s fair to say that, in recent years, Peckham has undergone a bit of a transformation. This used to be a bit of a dead-zone, between Bermondsey and Dulwich Village, but Peckham is now a destination in its own right.
Public transport probably has had to role to play in the emergence of Peckham as a place of interest. The London Overground opened its South London extension in 2012, connecting Peckham into central London. This made Peckham a prime residential location for city commuters – boosting house prices and bringing a new demographic into the area.
Today, Peckham still feels like it has a bit of an edge, but the effects of gentrification are hard to deny.
Here’s a few highlights that you might want to investigate on your next trip to South London.
This is an outstanding restaurant that is worth travelling for. This is the second restaurant from Nicholas Balfe and his team at Salon. Named after music producer Larry Levan, Levan is a modern space serving contemporary European food. Small plates, designed for sharing, allow you to sample the full range of the kitchen’s expertise. When it comes to wine, Levan focuses on natural or organic wines. It’s quality.
Peckham now has a sake brewery, and it’s really good!
I was there for an event when they were presenting a tasting menu matched with their sake, but you can just call in there for a drink and some snacks.
Definitely worth checking out.

A pop-up jazz club delivering a relaxed and cool night of jazz and drinking. Exactly the kind of night out you’d hope to find in Peckham.
