We caught up with Luis Canuto of LGBTQ travel specialists Spain Seven Degrees for a preview of their gay surf school on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria.
How hard is it to learn how to surf?
It’s not that hard, plus we have a really good teachers for beginners.
What sort of fitness level do you need?
Obviously, it’s the kind of sport that you need to have certain fitness level. It helps if you’re a strong swimmer, as there’s a lot of catching waves and then swimming back.
Is Gran Canaria a good place to learn how to surf?
It’s an amazing spot. The south – Playa del Ingles - is great for beginners and intermediate surfers. For more experienced surfers, the east and the north of the island are ideal.
The beaches of Gran Canaria are generally clothing-optional. Is this a clothing-optional surf school?
It’s advisable to wear a wet-suit when you’re surfing.
What else is there to do on Gran Canaria besides surfing?
The main attractions are the beach and the famous dunes of Maspalomas. The main area for the gay scene is the Yumbo Center in Playa del Inglés – a leisure and shopping centre with over 200 shops, restaurants, and bars. At night, it transforms into a hot-spot for gay nightlife.
