I caught up with tourism professional Sergio Miranda for a bit of career advice.
What led you to start exploring a career in tourism?
Uruguay is a tourist country, and I thought it was important to create a space for LGBTQ tourism.
Do you need any training or qualifications to work in the tourism sector, or is it something that you can learn on the job?
Uruguay has a number of tourism training courses that you can study, depending on where your interest lies.
Was the reality of working in the tourism sector like what you thought it would be?
Yes – I discovered a fascinating and very interesting universe.
What are some of the skills or attributes that you need in order to build a successful career in tourism?
It’s very important to have a passion for working in tourism – to be a host, to want the best for others, to offer quality, excellence in services, and value for money.
If someone was interested in exploring a career in tourism, what advice or guidance would you give them?
First is the training, and also to have a great vocation for this fascinating profession.
What are some of your goals and ambitions for the months ahead?
To continue to work to make Uruguay and Montevideo even better as LGBTQ-friendly destinations. To make Uruguay a tourist destination for our community around the world, showcasing Uruguay’s beauty, its people, its gastronomy, its culture, and its entertainment. Come to Uruguay for an unforgettable experience!
