Discovering a hidden jazz scene in Peckham
Often when I’m travelling, visiting cities around the world, I have a bit of a fantasy of stumbling into a cool but relaxed bar, where there’s live music and drinking and it’s just an easy, fun night out. That’s exactly what I found the other night in Peckham – a few stops away on the overground from where I live in London.
This was the Hidden Jazz Club – the brainchild of musician Theo and his partner Jannine.
Theo and Jannine have been running these events since 2017. They’ve brought jazz to venues in London neighbourhoods such as Chelsea, Brixton, Waterlooo, and now Peckham. There have also been international excursions, with plans for regular gigs in New York City, San Francisco, and beyond.
One of the secrets to the success of Hidden Jazz Club, is that they’re promoting their events through a partnership with Airbnb. If you’re visiting London and wanting to experience the city from a local’s perspective, then one of the suggested options available to you is a night in Peckham at the Hidden Jazz Club.
Peckham is an obvious choice for an outfit such as Hidden Jazz Club. This is a part of London that has been experience a total resurgence – it’s a neighbourhood that is almost unrecognisable to what it was a few years ago. Cool bars, top-drawer restaurants, and a young crowd interested in new things.
This is exactly on-brand for Hidden Jazz Club – it’s a relaxed and unpretentious approach to a rich genre of music that can sometimes seem a bit intimidating or inaccessible. Theo and Jannine had transformed a railway arch as the venue for their pop-up club. The acoustics were surprisingly good, even though you could see trains whizzing by just outside the door.
You don’t have to be a jazz aficionado to appreciate the talent, energy, and enthusiasm of the performers featured at Hidden Jazz Club – it’s a great introduction to a rich music tradition that will have you hungry for more.
