Get ready for Notts Pride!
Nottinghamshire’s Pride celebrations will be taking place on Saturday 27 July.
I caught up with Ben Nicholson from the Notts Pride team for a behind-the-scenes look at what we can look forward to.
How would you describe the LGBTQ community of Nottinghamshire?
The Nottinghamshire LGBTQ+ community is a vibrant multicultural and diverse group of people with a strong sense of pride and individuality in their gay community.
Why is it important for the queer community of Nottinghamshire to come together at an event such as Pride?
Pride is a celebration around the world, and allows people to come together to show a positive stance against discrimination and violence towards LGBTQ+ people. Pride is a promotion of equality, dignity, self-affirmation, belonging and visibility. This event creates an opportunity for the LGBTQ+ people of Nottinghamshire to celebrate their gender variance, sexual diversity and to celebrate each other.
The LGBTQ+ community is bigger than one person or one group, and we just need a little reminder of that. It’s a world of people who are often rejected and attacked for being who they are, expressing themselves in ways that feel right, and loving who they can’t help but love. Nottinghamshire Pride provides a gathering of all LGBTQ+ people to give hope to those who may feel that life will never get better.
Pride is also a remembrance of the queer heroes of our past who fought the hard fight to provide the modern LGBTQ+ community with free(ish) lives and with (some of) the respect we deserve. This reminds us that the fight is not over, and we must push on for true equality.
Are there any specific political or social issues that you’ll be highlighting?
Political – 50th anniversary of Stonewall, Chechnya, Brunei.
Social – Positive change for the Trans community, positive change for the minority LGBTQ+ groups, and HIV stigma (Undetectable, Untransmittable).
How many people are you expecting to attend this year’s event?
What do you hope that people feel when attending Nottinghamshire Pride?
We had a look of the messages of support from previous Pride events, and found these key words and sentences, and we hope these feelings remain:
- Proud in who they are.
- To feel free.
- Inspired to challenge adversity.
- Motivated to be the best version of themselves.
- A sense of community.
- Remembering the road to equality is not over yet.
