Greek gay opposition leader ousted in party coup
Stefanos Kasselakis has been deposed.
The main leftwing opposition political party in Greece is Syriza - until recently, it's leader was Stefanos Kasselakis.
Kasselakis was considered something of a political outsider. The 36-year-old was a former banker with interests in shipping. When he assumed the leadership of Syriza just under 12 months ago, he became the first gay man to lead a political party in Greece.
The push by the Greek government to pass legislation to deliver Marriage Equality was seen as the result of negotiations by Kasselakis who provided to support to the government in return for commitments on LGBTQ equality.
It's not clear what precipitated the fallout within Syriza, but the party's governing body voted unanimously to remove Kasselakis as its leader.
Some commentators are suggesting that Kasselakis was seen as too populist and not left-wing enough for the power-brokers within Syriza. It's possible that he will contest the next round of leadership elections that will be held in November. An alternative is that Kasselakis may seek to establish a separate political party.
Kasselakis is married to Tyler McBeth. The couple married in the United States in 2013.
