Today was Pride March day in Melbourne – one of the highlights of the Midsumma Festival which is the major LGBTQ Pride event for Melbourne’s queer community.
Summer in Melbourne can normally get pretty hot, but Australia is in the midst of an extreme heatwave, and today was what’s described locally as an absolute scorcher.
Today was the 24th annual Pride march in Melbourne, but organisers had considered whether to cancel the event due to the extreme heat. A number of community groups indicated that they would be marching anyway, even if the official march was cancelled. This left organisers with the prospect of LGBTQ people holding an unofficial march without the infrastructure and security support this type of event usually requires.
Ultimately, the march went ahead – organisers shifted the start time a few hours earlier to try and avoid the hottest part of the day – and thousands of people marched down Fitzroy Street in St Kilda to celebrate LGBTQ Pride.
Here’s a round-up of some of the photos from the day.
