Harry Styles delivers new music
We’re loving the new music from Harry Styles, and we’re loving his perspective on life.
The latest single is Watermelon Sugar.
The video begins with a dedication to touching. Remember touching? We miss touching.
It’s sweet and summery and sexy. It’s got us dreaming of sex on the beach.
How queer is Harry Styles?
Obviously, we’re projecting a lot onto the video of Watermelon Sugar, but it made us happy to see that Harry wasn’t the only guy in the middle of all that watermelon touching.
“Am I sprinkling in nuggets of sexual ambiguity to try and be more interesting? No…” says Styles, in an interview with the Guardian. “In terms of how I wanna dress, and what the album sleeve’s gonna be, I tend to make decisions in terms of collaborators I want to work with. I want things to look a certain way. Not because it makes me look gay, or it makes me look straight, or it makes me look bisexual, but because I think it looks cool. And more than that, I dunno, I just think sexuality’s something that’s fun. Honestly? I can’t say I’ve given it any more thought than that.”
“What I would say, about the whole being-asked-about-my-sexuality thing – this is a job where you might get asked…” adds Styles. “And to complain about it, to say you hate it, and still do the job, that’s just silly. You respect that someone’s gonna ask. And you hope that they respect they might not get an answer.”
Directed by Dave Meyers, the video gives us Harry being submerged in his emotions and regrets. With lyrics that feel fairly personal, Harry floats helplessly – Ophelia-like – as a relationship slips away.
Beautiful. Powerful. It’s easy to see why the world’s obsessed.
