The drama of underwear
If you’ve ever thought about launching your own line of underwear, the latest series from Revry takes us behind the scenes with Instagram entrepreneur On Mekahel for a look at how it’s done.
Putting On follows On Mekahel through the design, manufacture, and launch phases of the product, as he builds the business with his boyfriend – who he’s just broken up with.
I caught up with On Mekahel for a behind-the-scenes look at the series.
In this first season of Putting On, we follow your journey through the creation of your underwear brand. When you look back at this period, how do you feel about this stage of the business?
Looking back, of course it was exciting – it was the dreamer phase full of anticipation. Reality is also nestled in there, creating anxiety and stress and doubt. But the secret is that no matter what that reality might look like, you never give up, you never stop believing in yourself and your brand.
Did you have any reservations of sharing so much of your personal life with viewers through a reality series?
Not at all, I don’t mind sharing my life – I have a lot of fun being me. But I can definitely be protective of my personal life and my fiancé.
What are some of the challenges in sustaining a fashion brand beyond the excitement of launching the first range of product?
For me the biggest challenge was that many people in different realms of my life have certain expectations for me, especially when it comes to my successes and failures. Today, in a social media driven world, everything you do is under a microscope. So many eyes watching and mouths with something to say.
Who are some of your fashion icons or inspirations?
There are two people at the top of my list. The first is Kim K, she inspires me every day. Her fashion sense, business mind, and kind heart are all things I value and strive to be. The second would be Naomi Campbell. Besides the fact that she’s a legend, her continued relevance in the industry is unprecedented and something to be admired.
If someone was thinking about starting a fashion brand, what advice or guidance would you give them?
Just like a real estate agent says location location location, when it comes to a fashion brand I would say marketing, marketing, marketing! And a little something called fashion sense.
What are some of your goals and aspirations for the months ahead?
First and foremost, marrying the love of my life – he’s not featured in the first season of the show. Preparing for our move to Los Angeles from New York to further my acting career. Launching my new all-inclusive cosmetics line for men and women, and taking M.O. Underwear global, just to list a few. But we’re already filming season 2, so stay tuned to find out!
