The Good Liar – Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren, and Russell Tovey star in Bill Condon’s new film
The latest film from Bill Condon is The Good Liar – now on general release.
Starring Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren, Russell Tovey, and Jim Carter, The Good Liar is based on the novel by Nicholas Searle. Jeffrey Hatcher has adapted the screenplay.
The Good Liar gives us the story of career con-artist Roy Courtnay (Ian McKellen) who can hardly believe his luck when he meets well-to-do widow Betty McLeish (Helen Mirren) online. As Betty opens her home and life to him, Roy is surprised to find himself caring about her, turning what should be a cut-and-dry swindle into the most treacherous tightrope walk of his life.
I haven’t read the original novel, but what Condon has brought to the screen is a real treat. It’s perfectly paced storytelling with plenty of twists and turns – some you’ll see coming, and some you won’t.
It goes without saying that the acting is first class.
This is fairly familiar territory for Mirren, but she delivers every moment – you know that you’re in safe hands, from start to finish.
McKellen’s role has a lot more light and shade for him to work with, and he perfectly captures the complexities of Roy’s deceptions. We’re expecting Oscar buzz for McKellen – this could be the year he wins it.
Also great to see Russell Tovey on the big screen. He’s possibly getting a bit type-cast in playing good-looking gay men, but we’re not complaining.
Make the effort to go and see The Good Liar – it’s a class act from a creative team at the top of their game.
