Why do we watch porn?
There has been a fair bit of research about pornography. What we know is that both men and women find it sexually stimulating to watch porn. Men watch more porn than women, and a lot of men watch porn when masturbating – simply because it is sexually stimulating.
Is there any down-side to watching porn?
Whether porn use is healthy or harmful can only be decided once you understand the impact that it has on your experience of sex and life in general. An example of a harmful impact is that it could lead to you developing unrealistic expectations about sex.
Another example of how it could be harmful is where your use of porn begins to change the way that you enjoy sex. Some gay men watch porn while edging, or delaying their orgasm for long periods of time. This can be enjoyable for obvious reasons, but this isn’t something that you can generally replicate when you’re having sex with another person.
Porn may give you an unrealistic expectation of what sex should be like – this can contribute to issues around low self-esteem or anxiety. Gay men may often make potentially unsafe choices – particularly in relation to drugs – in the pursuit of the sex or the affirmation we seek.
We’re at our most vulnerable when we’re having sex – we’re putting ourselves out there for possible rejection, feeling unfit, feeling unattractive, feeling that our dick isn’t big enough, worried abut getting hard and staying hard – just being naked with a stranger is the definition of vulnerability.
How to develop a healthy relationship with porn
Talk about it
Don’t think of porn as some dirty little secret that you need to keep to yourself. Everyone watches porn. Porn stars work hard to create engaging content – they want you to appreciate their work. Talk it about it with your friends. Join an online chat group. Laugh about it. Share your favourite clips.
Mix it up
Try and avoid just watching the same kind of porn. There’s lots of different types of porn and erotica out there – become a bit of an aficionado. Try reading some erotic fiction, or diving into the world of gay comics. There’s a whole world of porn out there.
Watch with others
Porn isn’t something that has to be a solitary entertainment. If you’ve got a boyfriend or a partner or a regular fuck-buddy, suggest that you watch some porn together. If you’ve got a hook-up coming over, watching some porn together is a great way to get things started.
Experience real-life porn
Wherever you are in the world, you’re probably not going to be too far from a sex party where there’s porn stars having sex on stage. Or head to a bathhouse, sauna, or sex-on-premises venue. If you like to watch, there’s usually plenty of guys who like to put on a show.
Support your performers
Porn can get a lot more interesting when you start to build an emotional connection with the guys that you’re watching on screen. Learn the names of the guys that are rocking your world, follow them on Twitter, sign-up to their fan-subscription channels. The guys in this business have a lot of personality and make their living from entertaining – feeling part of that can help to keep your relationship with porn in perspective.
