Tune into the new queer radio station hear to bring a bit of sparkle into your life
If you need some more music in your life, then GlitterBox – a new queer radio station – could be what you’re looking for.
Eugenio Ceriello, Michael Walton-Dalzell, Diego Paganelli, and Ross Walton-Dalzell are the four men behind the music. I caught up with them recently for a behind-the-scenes look at life according to GlitterBox.
Why did you feel that there was a need to establish a new LGBTQ radio station?
There are lots of LGBTQ radio stations out there. However, variety is the spice of life! GlitterBox is mainly a hobby of four individuals. We set out to see if we could make a station interesting and engaging for the listener. Since we’re so new, we’re still finding our feet and building a social media presence to see what people feel and to evolve from their feedback.
What are some of the challenges in creating content for a global audience – do LGBTQ people around the world all want to listen to the same thing?
If we were all the same, life would be pretty boring. One of the things we’re working on are different shows for different audiences. We’re not quite at that stage yet, but progressing very quickly.
GlitterBox currently has a constantly playing stream which is targeted at the general audience, which we hope will appeal to everyone. The shows are targeted at specific audiences. Like our own shows “Circus” which covers Pride festivals and general LGBTQ topics. “Secret Horizons” – hosted by Mikey and Eugenio – which will take the listener on a ‘recorded as live’ investigation to some of the most haunted places in the UK, and “Jack’d Up” which is an EDM music show from LA.
We’re constantly building a reach with other presenters and stations to expand our content to reach the widest audience possible.
Who are your target audience?
Our target is quite wide. Glitterbox wants to be a station for the whole day, from the morning, going to work, to the evening, going out. We want to be different in content, not just in music. We also share news about the LGBTQ community, as well as news about about Science, Music, and Culture. Exactly like everyone’s life, with days that you just go out, dance and party, and other days when you chat with your friends about different topics.
We like our schedule to be fast, and upbeat. We’re using new formats, like the Pride Specials and interviews with the Pride teams organising festivals around the country. Our playlist is updated daily and managed based on the time-slots – waking up with GlitterBox and going to work means more uplifting songs and a heavier presence of old-time-classics. This leads to more Pop at lunchtime, while in the afternoon and evening you’ll hear more dance and rock music. It’s an inclusive station – you’ll find Donna Summer, Katy Perry, Jax Jones, as well as Alaska Thunderfuck and Adore Delano, mixed with Todrick Hall, Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Placebo.
Is this a radio station that will only appeal to queer people?
We don’t think so. It’s a station that will appeal probably to all Millennials. Everyone likes to sing and dance, and this is who GlitterBox wants to appeal too. Eclectic, alternative, fun – like pretty much all of us!
How do you hope that people feel when they’re listening to GlitterBox?
It’s widely known that music can have a hugely positive impact on an individual, or a group – stimulating the parts of our brains that make us feel good!
We’re pretty new at the moment, so we play a stream of dance anthems and old-school favourites while we focus on creating new and engaging content.
As our audience grows, we hope that the music and shows we play on the channel will help people to feel good and – even if only for a short time – forget about the daily stresses we all face in our lives.
In a nutshell, GlitterBox is all about bringing a bit of sparkle into your life!
