UK Theatre Round-up – which queer performances should be on your radar?

Which queer theatre shows should be on your radar in the months ahead? Here’s a quick round-up showcasing some of the best LGBTQ talent in the UK.
Birds and Bees, Sheffield Theatres, 25th Jan – 11th Feb
Following the critical success of Charlie Josephine’s trail-blazing show I, Joan, comes a new fiery and fearless production, Birds and Bees. This dynamic and poignant production follows the narrative of four school peers in a searing exploration of sex positivity, online safety and discovering their individual powers to spark change. Co-produced by Sheffield Theatres and Theatre Centre, their work generates daring and reverent work to amplify the voices of young people in the LGBTQ+ community.
Flies, Shoreditch Town Hall, 22nd Feb – 11th March
Another one brought to us from writer of I, Joan’s Charlie Josephine is Boundless Theatre’s highly anticipated world premiere of Flies. The acclaimed writer will once again disrupt the narrative and challenge convention with their bold new play, inspired by the classic William Golding novel Lord of the Flies.
Kissed by a Flame, The Pleasance, 1st – 11th Feb
A romantic tragedy for our times, Kissed by a Flame is inspired by events from Simon Perrott’s life, bringing an honest and heart wrenching reflection on queer love to Islington. Offering a window into the final months of that once- in-a-lifetime kind of love, audiences will explore the sentimental and bittersweet soundtrack of Jamie and Teddy’s lives together.
My Brother’s Keeper, Theatre503, 14th Feb – 4th March
Theatre503 and Relentless Productions are taking a tale of love, pain and learning. Written by BBC Writer’s Academy’s Mahad Ali and directed by Queer theatre-maker Robert Awosusi, this production explores the depths and complexities of unexpected bonds formed in a hostile climate whist exploring intimate themes of immigration, religion and sexuality. The play follows parallel pairings – refugee brothers and father-son business owners – who collide in platonic, familial, and romantic ties.
Tiny Fragments of Beautiful Light, Alphabetti Theatre, 31st Jan – 18th Feb
Directed by Karen Traynor, Tiny Fragments of Beautiful Light is an immersive, interactive exploration of one woman’s journey of self-discovery. This funny, joyful play – with a lesbian love story at its heart – is a celebration of our individuality and the joy and freedom that comes when we live as we truly are, and not as the world thinks we should.
