Women we love: Amy Lilley

The latest single from Amy Lilley is No Show.
Based in Cape Town, Amy Lilley is a singer/songwriter.
No Show explores the ups and downs of an undying love. The music video is directed by Thea Small – celebrating queer love and queer stories.
“Queer relationships have been left out of South African mainstream culture…” says Amy. “Whether it comes to love,
our communities, our families or our friendships. The queer story and journey is something that is so important. Unfortunately, we haven’t always had a chance to tell our stories or see them play out on screen. I look out and I ask myself how often are queer people in this country allowed to be seen as vulnerable and soft? It’s a luxury not provided to many.”
“I hope that on my journey as an artist I can assist in normalising queer relationships and eradicating stereotypes and tropes that have plagued us in our media. I wanted to show how beautiful love between two men can be and how all these things that have been built to divide us don’t actually exist. We hurt and we love and we are beautiful in every way.”
No Show is taken from Amy’s debut EP, She.
“She came together as a bunch of emotions I didn’t really know how to handle…” explains Amy. “I started writing songs just about what I was feeling at the time and portraying them the only way I knew how. ‘She’ is a love letter to a person in my life I’ve never been able to get over, that one person who will always have a hold on your heart. It’s about love and loss in its simplest form to me and everything in between.”
