Could this be the next Mr Gay Great Britain?
Mike Turner launches his campaign.
The title race for Mr Gay Great Britain 2024 is at the business-end of proceedings.
We caught up with one of the contenders, Mike Turner, to talk about his aspirations for the competition.
Why did you decide to enter Mr Gay Great Britain?
I was Mr Gay England in 2022 and competed in Mr Gay Great Britain that year. I came second, that time around.
It's something that I've been thinking about since then - having had a taste of it, I know how much work you need to put in order to be successful at something like this.
What's involved in competing for Mr Gay Great Britain?
There are seven rounds:
- The Charity Fundraiser
- The Written Exam
- The Audience Vote
- The Congeniality Round
- The National Dress Catwalk
- The Beachwear Catwalk
- The Formalwear Catwalk
For the charity fundraising round, we had to raise money for two charities - Pride Action North, and the Charlie and Carter Foundation.
For the Charlie and Carter Foundation - which support parents of seriously ill children - I organised a boxing match with my brother. Because the charity was founded after two brothers had passed away, I wanted to show that we were two brothers fighting for brothers.
I also had a big jungle themed fundraiser - there were snakes, tortoises, parrots, and an alligator - it was a huge success!
Plus I've put a lot of effort into my runway looks - they're all really meaningful to me.
I've been working hard on social media to raise awareness - I've even been handing out flyers in Gran Canaria.
What role do pageants such as Mr Gay Great Britain play in today's queer community?
They can give you a platform and a voice to help and inspire other people.
I want to help other lads that feel like they can’t come out.
What would it mean to you to be crowned as Mr Gay Great Britain?
Doing this again has made me realise what I actually want to do in life and that's to help and inspire other people.
I want to inspire people and send out a message to never give up on your dreams - sometimes you have to lose in order to win.
