Gay couples tie the knot as Marriage Equality comes to Thailand
Mass weddings take place as the queer community rushes to the altar.
With Thailand's marriage equality laws now in force, queer couples across the country have begun taking advantage of the legal change and formalising their relationships with a wedding.
It's been a long struggle for Thailand's LGBTQ community. Marriage Equality is about more than just having a wedding, it also opens the door to a range of next-of-kin rights such as finances, adoption, and medical care.
While Thailand has long been seen as welcoming of queer people, and has a vibrant and visible LGBTQ community, making progress on Marriage Equality has been slowed by the country's tumultuous political landscape. But the pro-democracy movement that gathered momentum in 2020 has helped to push for reforms and a more socially inclusive political environment.
Media representation has also played a role. There is a Thai version of the Drag Race franchise, and Thailand produces a lot of "boy's love" content - hugely popular across Asia - that positively portrays homoerotic relationships.
