Positive+1: A new resource for people living with HIV - it could be a game-changer.
It's a social platform and information source that seeks to enable connection and community.
While we have made significant advances in the treatment of HIV and the prevention of transmission of the virus, those of us living with HIV are still navigating a fair bit of complexity in our lives.
Not only do we have to stay up to date with the latest developments in treatment and health management, but we regularly encounter status-related stigma in many aspects of our lives.
Aiming to support people living with HIV with both resources and connection, Positive+1 is a new social network platform that has launched globally.
Designed to meet the needs of people living with HIV, over 20,000 people have already signed up to be part of Positive+1.
Members of Positive+1 have access to a wide range of resources such as educational materials, drug interaction charts, and local support networks based on your location. The platform also allows users to connect with both professionals and peers, fostering a sense of community and facilitating knowledge sharing.
"People with HIV experience stigma due to outdated stereotypes and misinformation..." explains David Vaughn - consultant to the United States Department of Health and Human Services. "This can often lead to people with HIV feeling isolated and experiencing poorer mental health. Positive+1 is a welcome addition, allowing people with HIV to connect with those sharing similar experiences. I hope the app will be the catalyst for many friendships and a space where people can seek advice and encouragement to stay healthy."
Organisations who have endorsed Positive+1 include San Francisco AIDS Foundation, AIDS United, AHF Pharmacy, Aid for AIDS Nevada, and the HIV/AIDS Policy team at The White House.
"It feels surreal to say we're finally here..." says Christian Mercer-Hall - founder and CEO of Positive+1. "This has been almost a decade in the making and I'm extremely proud of what we have achieved. A resource like Positive+1 is going to make a difference to so many people, on so many levels. For a community that continues to receive a bad reputation and high levels of misunderstanding, I hope Positive+1 is the beginning of a new era for HIV, connecting the community in a way that has not been possible before."
Positive+1 is available for download in the Apple app store and Google Play Store.
