What to watch: Sunflower
A coming-of-age story from Melbourne.
Written and directed by Gabriel Carrubba, Sunflower is a bildungsroman story set in Melbourne.
The central character is Leo (Liam Mollica). Leo is 17, at school, and figuring things out.
Events are brought to a head after a party with his friends - rumours begin circulating around school that Leo is gay.
This is a story that will feel familiar to many queer people - having to navigate their sexuality while also renegotiating key relationships in their life.
While Carrubba isn't necessarily tackling anything groundbreaking in this story, the excitement and uncertainty of teenage lust is nicely handled.
What's also refreshing - in a world that embraces the asexual queerness of Heartstopper - is that Leo is horny and does not hesitate to have sex the moment that it becomes an option. That felt real.
Sunflower is a cute coming-of-age story that is worth adding to your watch list.
