Written and directed by Mauro Carvalho, The Senator is a film from Brazil that leans into the melodrama of lust, hypocrisy, and politics.
The Senator gives us the story of rent-boy Renan, the closeted right-wing senator who pays his bills, and the journalist determined to expose the truth.
This is watchable story, tightly told. Tropes such as "closeted right-wing politician" and "kept boy" are presented broadly and without any in-depth exploration but the motivations of the characters are clear and the emotions are front-and-centre of the storytelling.
The cast includes Sérgio Harger, Johnny Alcántara, Juliana Zancanaro, and João Cury.
