Writers arrested in China crackdown on gay erotica

News reports from China indicate that authorities are stepping up the repression of LGBTQ people, with numerous writers being arrested for writing gay erotica.

Over 50 arrests have taken place across multiple provinces, so it appears to be a nationwide crackdown. The arrested writers could be sentenced to prison terms up to five years.

It's being reported that the writers that have been arrested in specialise in danmei - a genre that focuses on romantic relationships between male characters.

Equivalent to the Boys' Love genre that emerged in Japan and is particularly popular across Asia, "danmei" translates to English as "addicted to beauty" or "indulgence in beauty". It's a genre of fiction that is primarily read by women.

The writers that have been arrested appear to have been posting their work to online platforms - allegedly in contravention of obscenity laws that prohibit the dissemination of obscene electronic messages. According to the law, writing that depicts sexual acts is considered obscene.

It's the monetisation of erotic fiction that seems to have drawn the attention of the Chinese authorities - writers can earn money by selling their stories via online platforms.
