Theatre Watch: Did You Mean To Fall Like That?

Written by Stephanie Martin and performed by James McGregor, Did You Mean To Fall Like That? is a comedy that explores the expectations placed on us by modern-day masculinity.

The play gives us the story of Charlie, who is on a journey of healing while rejecting the pressures from society and embracing sexual fluidity.

"I was inspired to write Did You Mean To Fall Like That? as there felt like a gap for exploring the themes of what life can look like if the traditional or expected paths don't work out..." explains Stephanie Martin. "In our case, this is male bisexuality and later in life coming out as well as the difficulties surrounding divorce and fertility issues. There seemed to be a gap to hear from men about their inner lives, their sexualities, and their relationships with their dads, and friends. The show is about the unraveling of a man who has ticked all the boxes in life and the possibility of starting life all over again at 39. It is weird and wonderful and confronting – I want audiences to see how life can be so unexpected and joyous. It feels like Edinburgh is the perfect place to take this new work and I can’t wait for audiences to see more!"
