ManCrush: Marc McAulay

Based in Scotland, as well as working in the world of adult entertainment, Marc McAulay is a reservist with Britain’s Royal Air Force – the RAF.
Perhaps surprisingly, the RAF seem pretty relaxed about having servicemen who also film gay porn. Fully aware of Marc’s porn career, the RAF have said that as long as long as their personnel don’t bring bring the RAF into disrepute, then what they do in their private life is their business.
In years gone by, filming gay porn would have been considered disreputable, so it’s an illustration of how far we’ve come in terms of the mainstreaming of adult entertainment. It’s only 20 years ago that the British military began to officially welcome gay men into their ranks.
“Since I was a young child, I frequently went to the RAF air shows with my parents – I always loved the Royal Air Force…” explains Marc, when we ask what drew him to a military career. “When I was able to join the Air cadets and get to go to Leuchars air base and see the planes, I was hooked.”
“The cadets taught me how to fire a live weapon, general service knowledge and drills. I didn’t join up when I left school – I studied a fitness, health and exercise course in Aberdeen. I wanted to be a personal trainer in the military…” adds Marc.
“In 2008, I decided to enter the Mr Gay UK competition. I did okay – I placed second. I enjoyed the attention – I liked being topless on stage…” says Marc. “Following the exposure I received through the Mr Gay UK competition, I was approached with offers to do porn, but at that time I wasn’t ready.”
“Once it had been suggested to me, I did some research into the industry…” continues Marc, as we discuss what led him to taking the step into the world of adult entertainment. “The porn studios were in London, Manchester, and America – I was in Scotland, so I didn’t think any more of it.”
“Then, in 2017, a studio got in contact and invited me down to London for a casting audition. It was a paid audition, but I had to get myself down to London – it was a long journey on an overnight bus.”
“The audition went well, the casting director gave me good feedback, and from there I’ve been offered filming opportunities. Now, they pay for the train and hotels – there’s no more overnight buses.”
“When I enlisted in the Royal Air Force, I was advised that the Ministry of Defence security check would pick up everything, so I was upfront in my application about my work in adult entertainment…” explains Marc. “As well as porn, I’d worked as a stripper – I put it all down.”
“The Ministry of Defence’s position – and they’ve said this publicly when the media have asked about it – is that as long as it’s not bringing the Air Force into disrepute, then what I do in my personal time is my business.”
“There’s definitely been a change in recent years – you can also see that in their recruitment campaigns. They want to appeal to everyone – gay, straight, and trans people.”
“The first time that I was nominated for a number of Prowler porn awards, the RAF put me on the front of their internal magazine, saying ‘good luck, Marc, for the upcoming Prowler awards’. That made me so happy – it made me realise that I had the backing from my squadron and the Ministry of Defence. Times really have changed for the better.”
“When I started filming porn, I used my real name…” says Marc. “That is a bit unusual in the adult entertainment industry, but because I was known for being in the Mr Gay UK competition it made sense for me to just stick with that. Everyone knows me by my real name.”
“I’m not the only one. Dan Broughton – who won Mr Gay UK, filmed porn. He’s now in the Army – he also uses his own name.”
“I like and appreciate a uniform, but having worn one for years it has absolutely no sexual appeal…” says Marc. “When I did a Brutal Tops shoot, I wore an army uniform for that scene, and it just felt weird. But I do get it, some guys really love it.”
“I do however like PVC, and Mr Riegilio leather stuff – that’s the kind of thing that I like to wear on set.”
