Olly Alexander showcases the UK entry at Eurovision’s first semi-final
With Eurovision 2024 under way, we got to see the full performance of the UK entry in the first semi-final.
Unlike previous years – where we’ve only had a glimpse of the Big 5 entries – the 2024 song contest gives us full performances of all songs.
While it makes the whole show a little longer during these semi-final rounds, it helps the voting fans get a better sense of how the Big 5 tracks stack up against everyone else. It also gives the artists some much-needed experience in performing on the Eurovision stage.
Representing the UK, Olly Alexander’s track is Dizzy.
The staging is very strong – technically and visually.
Using the revolving cube concept, Olly and four dancers are boxers in some kind of dystopian gym in space.
It’s sexy and homoerotic and confident.
However, Olly’s vocals seemed a little less than confident. It’s a big song on a big stage – the kind of performance that can leave you vocally exposed. Whether it was nerves or a bit of a shaky technique, it didn’t seem that Olly was hitting the notes with the power needed to really make this a compelling performance on the Eurovision stage.
Will it win? Unlikely – it’s up against a very strong field and just doesn’t seem to have the punch to really cut through and connect with audiences.
Will it come last? Anything is possible with Eurovision – and the UK’s unserious approach to the whole thing does not go unnoticed by the voting public – but hopefully Olly’s name recognition and dynamic performance will be enough to deliver a respectable score.
