ManCrush: DeAngelo Jackson
Continuing to expand his career, DeAngelo has landed the cover of the SS20 issue of Office magazine.
Office is a New York City magazine that takes an unconventional approach to fashion and culture.
While this isn’t the first time that Office magazine has sought inspiration from the world of adult entertainment, landing a major cover like this is rare for guys who find themselves pigeonholed by their work in gay porn. But DeAngelo is looking very editorial in this shoot, and it’s clear he’s got the confidence and the body to tackle any project he turns his mind to.
We caught up with DeAngelo to see how he’s coping with life in lock-down.
How does it feel to see yourself on the cover of Office magazine?
Honestly, it’s a dream come true. I’ve wanted to crossover into the mainstream market for some time now, so seeing myself on the cover of Office is surreal. This is one of the first steps in becoming a mainstream star.
You’re about to hit our screens in Noir Male’s Sin City. Was this a chance to showcase your acting skills?
This is NoirMale’s first feature film – it’s directed by ChiChi LaRue.
I once again had the opportunity to showcase my acting in some scenes. It was a blast filming in Las Vegas for the first time.
Where have you been spending lock-down during the current pandemic?
I’ve been hunkered down in my home in Atlanta, Georgia. I’ve been focused on thinking positive and staying as active as possible, although I have also been playing a lot of Call Of Duty.
My daily routine has changed because gyms are closed, so I’ve been doing some home cardio and light strength-training – my plan is that once gyms do eventually open up, I’ll still be in decent shape.
I also hike Stone Mountain so that I don’t go stir crazy.
How have you adapted the content you’ve been creating for your fan-subscription channel?
I’ve been filming content of me playing videos games while nude, hiking, trying to cook, and working out while nude.
It’s essentially a day in a life with DeAngelo, while quarantined.
What are you looking forward to most in a post lock-down world?
I’m looking forward to going to brunch with family and friends and having some Mimosas!
At the most recent GayVN awards, DeAngelo Jackson was named Best Actor for his performance in Blended Family, produced by Icon Male.
It was a strong field of nominees that DeAngelo was up against – established names such as Nick Capra, Max Konnor, Michael Roman, and Mickey Taylor.
Blended Family also featured Adam Ramzi, Cade Maddox, Colby Tucker, Max Adonis, and Lucas Leon.
Following his GayVN win, we caught up with DeAngelo to find out what else was on his agenda.
How did it feel to win the GayVN for Best Actor?
I felt that win was much bigger than me. It’s still sinking in.
To be the first black performer to win that category was humbling. I hope by me winning this award it will open the door for other men of colour. We are more than a fetish and have so much more to bring to the table.
You won the GayVN for your work with Icon Male, and you’ve been working exclusively with Noir Male. But your latest release – Service Station – is with Men.com. Does this signal a shift away from Noir Male?
No, not at all – I have several scenes with Noir Male that haven’t been released yet.
We just wrapped filming Noir Male’s first feature film – Sin City, directed Chi Chi LaRue – it’s hot hot hot. Also, my team and I were able to offer some creative input on the ideation of the concept.
What was it like to work with Bruce LaBruce on Service Station?
It was an honour to work with Bruce LaBruce. It was a long, hard day of filming but the end-results were definitely worth it.
Was the work of Tom of Finland something that you connected with before being cast in Service Station?
I honestly knew nothing of the Tom Of Finland series before Men.com reached out to me about the project.
After they contacted me, I did a lot of research on my own and now I’m a huge fan. I was honoured to be part of such a beloved series, and I applaud Men.com for mixing it up and including men of colour.
One of the stereotypes of porn is that the acting isn’t very good. What are some of the challenges in delivering a strong acting performance in a porn production?
My only challenge was delivering a believable performance. I wanted the audience to enjoy the acting as well as the hot sex scenes. I hope I delivered.
I memorised not only my dialogue but also my co-stars’ dialogue. I wanted to be completely confident with the lines so I could add my own personality to the character.
What are some of your goals and aspirations for the months ahead?
I want to continue to get out of my comfort zone and try new things. More scripts with interesting characters that will challenge me is also a goal.
Who is DeAngelo Jackson?
A self-described ‘Army brat’, DeAngelo was born and raised in Germany – making the move to live in the US when he was 21. He’s made his home in Atlanta.
“I moved to Atlanta to become a police officer…” explains DeAngelo. “Destiny has led me in a very different direction, as you can see.”
“I got my start in the industry with the studio Flavaworks…” says DeAngelo, talking about the beginnings of his career. “That was in the Fall of 2008.”
“I’d been thinking of getting into the industry, ever since the age of 19. I’d always been open with my body. My body was decent at the time – looking at the other models, I thought I’d make a good fit.”
“I’m not a massive exhibitionist. On a scale of 1-10, I’d describe myself as a six.”
“I didn’t reach out to any companies until I went to college and needed the extra cash. I really knew very little about the industry, or what it takes to be a porn star.”
“I never suggest anyone get into porn…” says DeAngelo, when we ask him if he had any advice or guidance for guys thinking about giving porn a try. “This business can eat you up and spit you out.”
“It’s rare for anyone to last more than a year. It’s not for everyone – this is an industry that can destroy you if you aren’t ready for it. Once you start, there’s no going back – you have to be 100 percent sure that it’s what you want.”
“I’d honestly like to do some mainstream modelling…” says DeAngelo, talking about how he hopes that his contract with Noir Male will help him expand his career. “I’d also like to try my hand at acting – in something outside of the porn industry.”
“I saw an interview with Class Comics where they said that I’d be perfect to play the role of Space Cadet. I’d love the challenge of taking on a character like that. It would also give me an excuse to go blond again.”
The objective of Noir Male is to break down some of the racial stereotypes that we see in gay porn.
“I think Noir Male is having a positive impact as far as how men of color are represented on film…” confirms DeAngelo. “It’s still a very young company, so improvements are always being made.”
“Racism is still an issue in our society, so it’s no surprise it’s an issue in porn. Things are changing, but slowly. I’d like to think I’m helping to change some people’s view of gay black porn stars.”
“I love being apart of providing hot, fresh and sexy content.”
